Lily the hedgehog was excited but a little nervous. Today was her first day at The Early Years Academy, a place filled with games, stories and new friends. As she held her mother’s hand tightly, she whispered, “What if I don’t know what to do?”
Her mother knelt beside her and smiled. “There is someone very special at nursery who will always be there to help you,” she said. “Whenever you feel unsure, just look for them.”
As Lily stepped through the nursery doors, she was greeted by a friendly rabbit named Mrs Hoppity. “Good morning Lily, we are so happy to have you here,” she said warmly. “Let me introduce you to someone special, your key worker Mrs Hedgehog.”
Lily looked up and saw a kind hedgehog with gentle eyes and a welcoming smile. “Hello Lily,” said Mrs Hedgehog. “I am here to help you with anything you need. Let’s go and explore together.”
Throughout the day, Mrs Hedgehog was always nearby. When Lily was not sure how to start her painting, Mrs Hedgehog handed her a brush. “Just choose a colour you love and see where it takes you,” she said. Soon, Lily was swirling bright yellows and deep blues across the page.
In the reading corner, Mrs Hedgehog gathered the children for a story. She made the characters come to life with her voice, making everyone giggle and gasp. Lily snuggled into the cushions, listening closely.
At snack time, Lily sat next to Max the Mouse. She was not sure what to say, but Mrs Hedgehog gave her a gentle nudge. “Why don’t you ask Max what his favourite snack is?” she suggested. Before long, Lily and Max were chatting and laughing as they shared their fruit.
Later, when it was time to play outside, Lily noticed a tortoise sitting alone on the grass. “That is Timmy,” whispered Mrs Hedgehog. “He is feeling a little shy today.”
Lily hesitated, then took a deep breath. She walked over and smiled. “Would you like to play with us Timmy?” she asked. His face lit up, and he slowly nodded. Soon, the three of them were digging in the sandpit, building the tallest sandcastle they could.
As the day came to an end, Mrs Hedgehog gathered everyone for one last story. “Today we learnt that new places can feel a little scary at first,” she said, “but with a helping hand and a kind friend, everything feels easier.”
Lily gave Mrs Hedgehog a big hug. She had started the day feeling unsure, but now she knew that whenever she needed help, Mrs Hedgehog and all her new friends would be right there by her side.
