Exploring Nature: How Forest School at The Early Years Academy Transforms Learning

At The Early Years Academy ( The EYA), we believe in the power of nature to transform children's learning experiences. That’s why our Forest School Academy is an integral part of our curriculum. With Forest School Day on 13th October, we are excited to celebrate the unique benefits this approach brings to children’s development.

Forest School With The EYA-2

Why We Do Forest School at EYA

Forest School is more than just outdoor play—it’s an immersive, child-led approach that nurtures holistic development. It offers children the opportunity to engage with nature in meaningful ways, encouraging resilience, independence, and a love for the environment. At  The EYA, we’re committed to creating learning experiences that foster awe and wonder, and our Forest School programme is central to this mission.

The Six Core Principles of Forest School

The Forest School Association defines six core principles that guide the Forest School approach. Each principle is carefully embedded in our practice at The Early Years Academy:

1. Forest School is a long-term process of regular sessions

Unlike one-off outdoor activities, Forest School is an ongoing programme. At The EYA, we integrate Forest School into the weekly routine, providing children with continuous opportunities to explore, develop, and grow over time. This long-term engagement helps children build deeper connections with the natural world and refine their skills at their own pace.

2. It takes place in a natural environment

Our Forest School sessions are always held in natural outdoor spaces. Whether children are exploring woodlands, building dens, or interacting with wildlife, the natural environment is central to the experience. At The EYA, we believe that outdoor learning enhances children's sensory experiences and fosters a deeper understanding of the world around them.

3. Forest School promotes holistic development

Forest School supports children's physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development. Through activities such as climbing trees, balancing on logs, and solving problems together, children develop important life skills like teamwork, communication, and resilience. Our programme is designed to nurture the whole child, promoting confidence, self-awareness, and emotional well-being.

4. Forest School offers opportunities for risk-taking

Managed risk is an essential part of the Forest School experience. At The EYA, children are encouraged to assess risks and challenges, whether it’s navigating uneven terrain or using simple tools. Learning how to take risks safely builds confidence and resilience, important skills that support children in all areas of life.

5. Forest School is run by qualified Forest School practitioners

All of our Forest School sessions are led by practitioners who are trained and certified in the Forest School approach. This ensures that children are not only safe but are also guided by educators who understand how to support each child's unique learning journey in the outdoor environment.

6. Forest School uses learner-centred processes

At the heart of Forest School is a learner-centred approach. Children are given the freedom to follow their interests and curiosity, whether they’re investigating bugs under a log or building a shelter. This autonomy supports their individual learning styles and encourages self-directed exploration. At The EYA, we facilitate learning through observation and support, allowing children to take the lead in their own discoveries.

Forest School and Our Curriculum

At The Early Years Academy, our Forest School Academy ties into our broader curriculum, which focuses on play-based learning. Forest School complements other specialised programmes like our Growing Academy, where children learn about sustainability through gardening, and our Baking Academy, which fosters creativity and fine motor skills in the kitchen. Together, these programmes provide a well-rounded, holistic educational experience that supports children in every aspect of their development.

Celebrating Forest School Day

On 13th October, we will be celebrating Forest School Day with a series of special activities designed to immerse children in the wonders of nature. We invite parents to join us in exploring the natural environment with their children, participating in activities that highlight the benefits of outdoor learning.

By embracing the Forest School principles at The Early Years Academy, we are not only enhancing children’s physical, emotional, and cognitive development but also fostering a lifelong appreciation for nature and the environment.

Join us in celebrating Forest School Day and see how our Forest School Academy can make a positive impact on your child’s learning journey.
